Why Do We Love Alternative Sports?

Why Do We Love Alternative Sports?

At the Rafa Nadal Foundation Centers, we see sport as a tool for transformation. Not only as a physical activity, but also as a vehicle for values, inclusion, and personal development. And on that path, alternative sports have become great allies.

But… what makes these sports so special?

Sports for Everyone, Regardless of Their Abilities

Unlike traditional sports, in alternative sports it doesn’t matter what physical or technical level each participant has. These games are designed so that everyone can play, with no one left out due to their condition, experience, or skills.

These sports promote active group participation, cooperation, and respect—making them an ideal educational tool for teaching inclusion through play.

Artizkirol: Always a Team Game

One of the alternative sports we play at our Centers is Artizkirol, a game that mixes elements of handball, football, and rugby. Its main feature is that all players are constantly involved: they pass the ball, move together, and support each other.

There’s no standing on the sidelines or room for exclusion in this sport. The goal isn’t to win at all costs, but to make the team function as a whole, where everyone has a role, and everyone participates and enjoys themselves.

Other Alternative Sports That Teach and Unite

In addition to Artizkirol, we also use other alternative sports in our Centers, such as:

  • Colpbol: A team sport where the ball can only be struck with open hands. It promotes equality and prevents aggressive physical contact. It’s fast-paced, dynamic, and demands constant cooperation.
  • Kin-ball: Played with a huge ball over a meter in diameter, and three teams play simultaneously. The key is coordination and collaboration, not only with your team but sometimes with the others too. A great example of inclusive, cooperative, and fun play.
  • Ultimate Frisbee: A sport with no referees, where respect for rules and for opponents is essential. It encourages self-management, empathy, and fair play.

More Than Just a Game: Tools for Life

Alternative sports not only help us move and have fun—they also teach us values that are useful both on and off the field: teamwork, listening, tolerance, respect, and the importance of making sure no one is left out.

That’s why at the Rafa Nadal Foundation, we promote them as an essential part of our educational work.

We believe in a sport that doesn’t exclude, but includes; that embraces diversity and boosts the personal growth of every child. A sport where the most important thing is not to stand out individually, but to be part of a group where everyone matters.
